Tiene apenas 1,84 km2 de superficie. Se encuentra a 46 km. de Buenos Aires, a 33,5 km del Puerto de Tigre y a 4 km de la costa uruguaya. Parece una tierra incógnita, pero dentro de sus límites alberga un trozo fundamental de la historia argentina. La isla Martín García llegó a acoger a algunos de los políticos más importantes de la Argentina.

La isla, un conjunto rocoso perteneciente al macizo de Brasilia de la edad precámbrica, se destaca a la distancia por su intenso color verde. Se encuentra próximo al faro y su punto más alto es de 27 m. sobre el nivel del mar. Su flora y fauna, similar a la de la selva misionera, están acompañadas por un clima templado y húmedo con tendencia a cálido.

Pero sus condiciones ambientales no fueron el eje de atracción durante sus cinco siglos de vida. Con 500 años, supo ser testigo de innumerables acontecimientos históricos.

En 1516, el explorador Juan Díaz de Solís navegó por primera vez las aguas del Río de la Plata en busca de nuevos horizontes y así sucedió. Durante el viaje, el despensero de la expedición murió y el español decidió buscar un lugar para darle cristiana sepultura. Además de cumplir con su deber de buen samaritano, bautizó a la isla con el nombre ese tripulante: Martín García.

Durante un tiempo, fue el lugar al que iban a parar los presos más peligrosos de la ciudad de Buenos Aires y de Montevideo. Luego adquiriría un peso clave en la historia sociopolítica argentina: fue uno de los sitios elegidos para mantener incomunicados a líderes políticos.

Hipólito Yrigoyen, Marcelo T. de Alvear, Arturo Frondizi y nada menos que Juan Domingo Perón fueron algunos de los políticos que estuvieron presos en la isla.

La comisión del Río de la Plata, el centro cívico y la escuela actual Juan Díaz de Solís funcionaron en su momento como establecimientos de detención.
